Betty And A Butterfly by KatesFriend

Greetings everyone. Here is one of the "quick" doodles I promised to post while I begin my migration to a new rendering system. Which is to say, you may be seeing more photographs than rendering from me in the weeks to come. Fortunately the grand opening of Waterloo Region's iON LRT is in late June (21 June 2019 at 10:30am) so I will have an excuse. This Poser portrait is of Betty - Betty of Archie Comics fame. Okay, Betty of Archie Comics when I was young. Okay, Betty of.Archie Comics from when my older siblings were young because I got their hand-me-downs - okay. Although I don't recall Betty with a nose stud or a bindi back then, I definitely recall her wearing bow ties and gloves more often. Shirley, a different time. I know, don't call you "Shirley". #snicker Now for some technical details. I find getting the eyes as lifelike as possible goes a long way in conveying a greater impression (or illusion) of realism. To that end, in a close up like this I am apt to place a slight and soft (and not immediately noticeable) reflection on the cornea. This makes the eyes seem to respond to the local lighting and objects near by. Another trick is to first aim both eyes at the point of attention carefully. Then adjust the up-down and side-to-side controls out of alignment by a degree or two, placing the eyes out of sync. To me this creates a sense of movement which human eyes are always doing regardless of focus or attention. Another important adjustment for rendering portraits is to lower the shading rate on key features. In this case the shading rates for Betty's head, neck, hair and eyes as well as the butterfly's wings were lowered from their defaults of 0.2 to 0.01. This allows the corresponding textures - such as Giana's Sunsirae skin textures for V3 used here - to render in finer detail. Though, the rendering minimum shading rate (in advanced render settings) was ultimately set to 0.02 - going any smaller would have taken weeks to render. Thanks for taking the time for a view and feel free to leave comments if you wish. I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. Sorry, no nudity. Cheers!

OK - now here's something I don't understand..... Betty, Veronica, Archie, Reggie, Jughead, et al have got to be a whole lot older than me. I mean they were teenagers when I read their comics when I was a Cub Scout! So howcome they're all still teenagers? And I'm an old.... Aw, never mind... 😜
Anyway, You did a great job on Betty - she looks great! Sweet work!
