When Leslie gets done early at the Sailmaker’s Arms she goes across to the captains house to see it he needs any help. It doesn’t take long - he keeps the place as neat as a pin. So she sits on the floor and listens to his stories. His stories include both adventures at sea and in port but also fairy tales with an oriental twist that he collected to tell his daughter on his too rare visits home. Leslie comes from an unsettled family and the captain’s house is the one place she feels safe and secure. The captain’s stories transport her to another place and time.
