Description

The genus Cebuella separated from other Amazonian marmosets by crossing the mighty Rio Madeira and is now found throughout the Upper Amazon with the Tamarins. No other marmosets spread west of the Rio Madeira. The pygmy marmoset is the species that has pushed the nanisation process initiated millions of years ago by South American maritimers the furthest. It is the smallest monkey in the world and the second smallest primate on the planet (after the pygmy microceb), it measures only a dozen centimetres. Due to its small size, the pygmy marmoset has more potential predators than other monkeys. Birds of prey are a constant threat. He sweeps the horizon by turning his head 180°. To avoid being spotted, he wears a cryptic dress, above brownish fawn mixed with greyish black. Its mode of travel is also very special: when stationary, it is practically undetectable.
