Description

Les historiens de l'art distinguent les modillons rampants, perpendiculaires au tracé de l'élément architectural qu'ils soutiennent, ou, plus rarement, des modillons d'aplomb, c'est-à-dire verticaux Angles : Commune of Vendée, France Modillion : A small block of stone, carved in a fine or coarse way, it differs according to the nature of the materials at the sculptor's disposal and its arrangement. Differences in the nature of the soil have influenced both the landscape and the art of building. The material played on the shape and structure of Romanesque churches. Hard rocks (granitic or volcanic) produce a severe architecture of shapes and colour. These resistant materials are much less suitable than limestone for rich, finely carved ornaments. Art historians distinguish between creeping modillions, perpendicular to the layout of the architectural element they support, or, more rarely, plumbing modillions, i. e. vertical

Interesting upload, as you say the local geology of the land has big impact on building materials. Its very noticeable driving from England into Scotland which is also an ancient continental boundary with very different rock types.
