Description

Does anyone have an idea what this grasshopper is doing? I saw him a few weeks ago, and he occasionally moved a little further, but always stuck that "pin" in the ground. btw, it was a big grasshopper. I'm curious if anyone knows the answer, but thank you very much

I think SoulTaker is correct. Great capture.

Ik denk dat SoulTaker gelijk heeft. Grote vangst.

That's what we call a 'katydid' here in the States - and they can be pretty big. That's a female, and SoulTaker is exactly right. That long tube is how she lays tiny eggs in the soil. A really outstanding photo, by the way! Very sharp and clear.

Yes, Jacomina, some of your commenters are correct: That is called an "Ovipositor"---it's a tail on the end of a female grasshopper, and the female uses it to deposit (lay) her eggs. ("Ovi" is related to "Ovum"---egg. "Positor" is related to "position": To put something in position.)

With Rod, this is a crystal-clear photo, quite beautiful, full size. And we can see every vein in the wings, and every scale on the body, and the little 'burrs' on her legs. A very fine macro of a grasshopper. (You may know this, but if you don't: The male makes its "sexual song" by rubbing its wings together: They have 'combs' on their wings; and when they rub the combs with the opposite wing, they get that grating "comb" sound. That's how they get females to mate with them. This female obviously found some male very attractive.) A really fine macro, Jacomina.

I would have said that this was in fact a cricket not a grass hopper based on the long antennae grasshoppers have short antennae and crickets have long antennae
