Description

Située à Gennes près de Saumur Juchée à 41 mètres au dessus de la Loire, l'église date du XIème siècle. Le clocher est surmonté d'une flèche octogonale de 15 mètres. Sa situation exceptionnelle au-dessus de la Loire en fait un observatoire de choix. A la révolution de 1789 le lieu de culte est abandonné. En 1833 la municipalité y installe une école. Aujourd'hui, il ne subsiste de l'église que le chœur, le transept et les deux absidioles. La nef ne possède plus que des pans de murs. De plus ce lieu est devenu un mémorial en mémoire des Cadets de Saumur et de leur compagnons d'armes morts pour la France en juin 1940. Located in Gennes near Saumur Perched 41 metres above the Loire, the church dates from the 11th century. The bell tower is topped by a 15-metre octagonal spire. Its exceptional location above the Loire makes it an ideal observatory. During the 1789 revolution, the place of worship was abandoned. In 1833 the municipality set up a school there. Today, only the choir, the transept and the two apsidoles remain in the church. The nave now has only sections of walls. In addition, this place became a memorial in memory of the Cadets of Saumur and their comrades-in-arms who died for France in June 1940.

Once again thank you for taking on this wonderful trip through France. Still I find it sad so many of these places are "Former" places of worship. Or am I mistaken does worship still continue here?
