Description
Nim woke early the next morning. He felt fully recovered but knew better. His Augmenter abilities helped him regain his strength faster, but it was somewhat of an illusion. Magnified strength didn’t support spells as well as normal strength did. He was safe from going into another wizard’s trance, but he couldn’t cast yet. He dressed and then looked at that spell book Pt’this had brought him. It had been a long time since he had read this language. The spells from his mentor’s spell book he had copied to his own, translating them to Tricot.
He wondered whose book it was. There hadn’t been many immortals in Baj-tisk. Aside from his mentor and the one he didn’t know, he didn’t think there had been any in his lifetime. It was possible the book was older than that, but he doubted it. Of course, the few immortals that lived outside their homeland and weren’t bent on destroying or taking over the world tried to keep to themselves. It was possible there had been others living in Baj-tisk.
Soon, Pt’this joined him to scry Joanne. “Remember, I’m not like you. This needs to be short.”
“I understand. Just a quick scry to let her know I’m okay.” Nim nodded. Drawing from Pt’this’s energy, he cast the spell. This time, he could see Joanne. She was in bed. He hoped she didn’t sleep naked.
“Good morning, Joanne,” he said. She sat up startled. She had on the same shirt she had worn the morning Andy’s parents had arrived at the boarding house.
“Joanne, it’s okay. It’s just me.”
Then she saw them and smiled. “Good morning Nim, Pt’this. I didn’t think I’d get to talk with you for a few days. I was worried.”
“That’s why we scried you, so you wouldn’t worry. Pt’this is helping me with this so we can’t talk long. I just wanted to let you know I’m okay.”
“Joanne, I have a favor to ask you,” Pt’this said. “If Nim is drawing while he talks with you, watch him for tiredness or fatigue, so there isn’t a repeat of last night.”
“Oh, okay. I can do that.”
“He’ll explain more about that and what happened last night when he scries you in a few days.”
“I’ll make sure of it,” she assured him.
“I’m not strong enough to keep the spell going, so you two say goodbye quickly.” He walked out of the room.
“I don’t want to say goodbye. I’d rather say see you later,” Joanne said.
Nim nodded. “See you later, my dear. I look forward to it.” Then he ended the spell.
