More Bloody Gold Esmeralda stopped the maudlin dirge that had reduced most of the soldiers to tears. An officer, unsteady in his walk, approached with a thick gold chain clasped in his hand. "A gift,Marquesa," he said in passable Spanish, holding out the stolen trinket. "For your song and beauty and generous hospitality." "You are too generous General," she giggled, "Esmeralda is but a poor Gypsy and not worthy of such a beautiful gift." "Captain, Captain Habersham of the Kings own Dragoons." He belched, staggering closer and dropping the necklace into her lap. "Take it," he said. "We've plenty more. We took it from the Frogs anyway." "Then I shall sing of your bravery Captain," said Esmeralda, strumming her laut once more. "Please do," said the Captain, staggering two steps back and waving his arms. "This Spanish wine of yours is excellent," he said, looking round for his cup, "such deep flavours. Much better than the Frog stuff, and it fair knocks a man out." "That is due to our local herbs Captain." "Oh! Licquorice I suppose." "I believe the main one is a kind of parsley," said Esmeralda. "Umbelliferae," smiled the Captain slumping down with a satisfied look. 'Conium maculatum,' (hemlock) added by me after you killed the abbess, my god mother, corrected Esmeralda in her head.
