Description
It was dark, and the place looked strange. Andy had only been gone a few months, but he had gotten used to Torthoc, candles instead of electric lights, horses instead of cars, fewer people and sounds, even the smells. He looked around and recognized where they were. It wasn’t far from the boarding house, though now it was worlds away from home. “It’s too late to get rooms. We’ll need to go to the boarding house. This way,” he said. “And stay off the road.”
“Shades of night, you’re not kidding,” Shunati said as a car whipped by.
“We should get something to eat,” Ann suggested. “No one had much dinner.”
“Do you have any local money? Andy asked.
“Back at the house.”
“We’ll order pizzas,” he suggested.
At the boarding house, they told everyone to be quiet so they wouldn’t wake the boarders. That was all they needed was more attention.
“Joanne said everyone was gone for the summer,” Nim said.
“That window with the light isn’t her room. Someone’s back,” Ann said.
“That was my room,” Andy observed.
“She must have found a renter.” Ann led the way to her third-floor room. It was crowded with furniture where they had stored Andy’s stuff there too. They set about making room to eat and sleep while Andy ordered pizzas and soda.
Everyone enjoyed the pizza although Pt’this growled when Ann pointed out the meats were all pork. The soda was less well-received. Being clear, people assumed it was water despite the bubbles. Sapphire, having had it before, was just a little surprised and enjoyed drinking it. Nim was amused by the bubbles. Shunati thought it was too sweet and switched to water. Ann promised to get him some vinegar when they went to the store. The carbonation stung Pt’this’s throat. Apparently, it was still sensitive from where he had burnt it the previous spring breathing fire in his elf form. Emeton and Tylan enjoyed it once they got over their surprise.
After they ate, they found places to sleep. Nim had wanted to go sleep outside in true form, but they figured that might scare people, or at least draw unwanted attention since there were no dragons native to this world.
“I could show you Jo’s room. She’d probably share her bed,” Andy offered.
Nim shook his head, blushing. “I didn’t tell her I was coming. It’s late. I don’t want to startle her.”
So they all went to sleep, all except Andy. After getting Drepal to sleep, he watched and waited for Ann to sleep. He then watched over her for nightmares. He knew being back in Lerjao, dealing with the trolls, and finding Kith’s body had been hard on her. He didn’t sleep until she woke up.
