Description

The vernacular name morpho or blue morpho can refer to several species of iridescent blue butterflies of the genus Morpho, which live in the tropical forests of Central and South America: Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana (Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana) and Venezuela. This butterfly is astonished by the metallic colours of its wings. The more discreet reverse side has eye-spots, which mimic the eyes of many birds, to scare off predators. The caterpillar, on the other hand, has a rather repulsive smell. It can live up to two months, and feeds mainly on ripe fruit juices. It flies over rivers where it has the place to fly freely and where it avoids predators as much as possible. It is one of the largest butterflies in existence with a wingspan of 12 to 20 cm.
