Description

Goodfellow's tree kangaroo Dendrolagues (literally: tree rabbits) or tree kangaroos (genus Dendrolagus) are tree macropodids. They are found exclusively in the tropical forests of New Guinea and in the extreme north-east of Queensland in Australia and the surrounding islands, usually in mountainous areas. All are threatened with extinction. It weighs about 7 kg, the female being generally a little heavier than the male. Like other tree kangaroos, Dendrolagus goodfellowi is very different in appearance from land kangaroos. Unlike its cousins who live on the ground, its hind legs are not disproportionate to its front legs, which are strong and end in powerful claws, allowing it to climb trees. Its hind legs end in four claws, two large and two small. Its coat is short and woolly, generally chestnut to reddish-brown, with a grey-brown face, yellow cheeks and feet and a pale belly. It has a long golden tail and two stripes of the same color on its back.
