Description

Second test of those new NASA texture and bump maps of the Earth's moon. View this full size and zoom in to see the details, especially close to the terminator lines. You can download the bump map and colour map at huge resolutions and use them with a sphere in your 3D software. Here I again used Blender because it is the fastest rendering 3D software I have, and it looks rather nice for the effort of just a few minutes. NASA did most of the work of course when they prepared the maps! I'll use proper star maps at some stage to generate the correct stars but for now the stars in these images are rather crude. Thanks are due to NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio for the work in preparing these maps. I used a bump and colour map both 16384 pixels by 8192 for these renders. Go get the maps if you want them here: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4720

Ha, and it was a few minutes work! I had already been working on making planets and moons in Blender and saw the news of the NASA maps for our moon so I downloaded those quickly, loaded the old Blender file, replaced the previous dubious textures I had and then saved the file under a new name. All that remained was to choose a camera and render, save, choose another camera and render...

Stunning - the detail is amazing!

I just downloaded all the files... Now to see if I can blow up Poser or DAZ.... LOL I do have Blender - just DL'd the latest version, but I need to watch some tutorials so I know what the heck I'm doing with it..
