Description
"Pangur Bán", is a poem by an unknown 9th century Irish monk about his cat, "White Pangur". Its been widely translated into English in several stylised versions. Its a lfairly lengthy poem but here are a couple of extracts from a translation by the poet laureate Seamus Heaney; his version is probably the closest in feel to the Old Irish original.
"Pangur Bán and I at work,
Adepts, equals, cat and clerk:
His whole instinct is to hunt,
Mine to free the meaning pent.
... Next thing an unwary mouse
Bares his flank: Pangur pounces.
Next thing lines that held and held
Meaning back begin to yield..."
