Description

The Barbary Macaque (Macaca sylvanus), also known as a magot or Berber macaque, is a catharhine monkey of the family Cercopithécidae. It is the only monkey living on the African continent, in the wild in the relict forests of Morocco and Algeria, as well as on the rock of Gibraltar, where it was introduced several centuries ago and represents with the human (Homo sapiens) the only primate in Europe in freedom1. The other species of the genus Macaca live mainly in South and Southeast Asia, and is considered to be one of the ancestral forms of the twig of macaques that appeared in Africa 5.5 million years ago. Nevertheless, its morphology and ecology testify to a real adaptation to the living conditions in the Atlas Mountains in the Maghreb and therefore, although the species has always remained on the continent of origin, it differs greatly from the first monkeys that appeared.
