A friend of mine who has degrees in both Zoology and Genetics has commented that it shows our human bias to say that animals are not intelligent, as they are generally intelligent enough not to spoil and pollute their living space. Actually, it would be more accurate to say there are various types of intelligences. What we think of as the human "style" of intelligence is focused on communication (so we can further develop ideas from those before, using earlier ideas as a foundation for later ones) and manipulation (to alter the natural world for some sort of benefit). Taken together, earlier manipulations are the foundations for later more advanced manipulations. Many animals have 1 or the other (Dolphins and Wolf packs communicate for example; and both Spiders and Beavers manipulate the world).
