Jasper Johns did all those flag, number and target paintings (etc), and when one looks at them closely, they see he fills common symbols of our lives with all kinds of visual activity...you've done that here. A somewhat complex abstract portrait of a pitcher on a table...it's simple, but the unexpected angles make it unexpectedly complex. And you've got all kinds of stuff going on at a close level: I love how the greens crawl and spill all over the edges, in sections; and your free use of "ghost lines" through various sections---the green lines against yellow-white (the pitcher), the white lines against the blue, etc. And again, the oil pastel is smear-y, boisterous and commanding. We've seen your portraits from a while back, and I've seen this kind of heavy stroke, heavy application of hue and shading, etc. But I don't remember seeing it applied in something this abstract before, and given that you're portraying a pitcher, a table, a background, etc, it's striking. The paper can be felt too...it's invaded and pushed around by your technique. A really potent abstract portrait. (Its simplicity reminds me of some Matisse's too.) You really lit into drawing media. (the signature says "79"---I think---so I assume this is from a while back.)
