Description

Thorgerd (Þorgerðr Hölgabrúðr) is a minor Norse divinity best known from the 10th century Jómsvíkinga saga, which focuses on a battle between the fleets of the Jomsvikings and that of Haakon Sigurdsson. Haakon, by sacrificing his own son, persuades Thorgerd to aid him in the battle, She uses the forces of the weather to halt the enemy's ships and to deflect their arrows. The stories of Thorgerd have become somewhat conflated in later histories with those of the famous shieldmaiden Lagertha, Queen of Norway and once the the wife of the semi-legendary Ragnar Loðbrók (as those of you who watch"Vikings " on TV will doubtlessly be familiar with). For this picture I have used elements of both characters; the flying hair, spear and shield are all traditionally associated with Lagertha; the divine intervention and stormy weather is all Thorgerd's though.
