Description

The Fremont Theater is a historic movie theater in San Luis Obispo, California in the United States of America. It is among the last Streamline Moderne theaters built by architect S. Charles Lee. It opened in 1942 on the eve of U.S. entry to World War II. Throughout its early years it served both as a moving pictures theater and a live theater. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fremont_Theater

Beautiful old theatre! Takes me back to some of the golden days of movies from the 50s, my childhood. Nice photo.

(I remember the architect, because he studied Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright, both for their Chicago work...) This pic should be seen small, and then large; small gives the overall, full-size gives us the detail. I love that this big curvilinear facade is sunken in shadow, like an old hollywood grande dame, shadowed but still grand; with that glorious 'crown' above the entry way. And yet the sky is bright white and blue. Love the contrast...it's aged but proud as all hell. (I'd like to say the same for myself...)

But close up, we see that those beautiful curvilinear lines are actual segmented neon, with glass, and all those soldered connections...brings us back to reality (you got good detail here). We see the decay too---which is always strangely beautiful on these old queenly facades. And the lettering is the precursor of what many of us know, today, as the "Broadway" font (which was used in Marx Bros and other film ads of the time). Your shot shows this reaching to the sky, with all its darkness and decay intact, asserting its beauty no matter what. Revealing shot, I'm really glad you posted this.

Really wonderful shot of this classic theater building, Richard! I've got a theater prop somewhere in my runtimes of something similar. I think it was by Greenpots. Anyway, you captured the magical feel of going to the movies on Saturday afternoon back in the day. I can smell the popcorn from here...
