I left a lengthy comment on your most recent drawing going into shading issues. In this one, I see further dirty shading, but the style here is more expressive and much less realistic so the messy shading actually works in its favor! The most important issue remaining in this context is that there are many smudgy marks that look like they were unintentional and can be avoided just by putting something under your hand when you draw. This is a poetic and expressive image and I like it a lot!

I can see what tuerda's saying, but perhaps he's seeing these as pieces ready for display rather than as studies. I don't know how you intended them, but I just remember when I was drawing years back (and I didn't have your skills), I drew, drew, drew; and while I used genuine discipline, often I'd get smears and let them go, because I wanted to keep making drawings. So there are pros and cons on both sides. (Many of the greatest drawings in art history have all kinds of imperfections...but then, others don't.) In any case, yes, this is poetic and expressive, as tuerda says, and the intensity you give to WHalloran is impressive: He stands out against that almost dreamy barn (dreamy for the lack of a lot of shadow or darkness). And that intensity flows through the center of your drawing, as well as through that intense bucket...surrounded by much simpler, freer background, etc. Your pencil work, in spots, resembles watercolor washes, a pencil effect that I admire. An intense study of a man immersed in work; and your shading around his head and other areas is quite expressive.
