Description

Ann awoke in her own bed. Shunati had needed to put her to sleep to heal her wing. He must’ve been able to heal it fully since she was back in human form. There was no way any of the dragons would’ve made her change if she wasn’t healed. That would prevent the injury from ever healing properly, and she’d never fly. Andy was lying next to her. He wasn’t awake, but she couldn’t tell if he was sleeping or still in a trance. “He hasn’t woken yet,” Nim said softly. “No one can figure out why.” He was sitting on her couch, Joanne’s head resting in his lap. She appeared to be asleep. Her collar and wristbands were gone. “Grandfather?” She asked. “They’re out back working on him now. He’s going to need his vial. He’s in true form.” Ann nodded. “Draw me a stick figure.” She knew Nim hated doing simplistic figures, but there wasn’t time for more and she couldn’t think of anything else. There was a pen and paper on the desk. He tapped Jo, and she sat up. He drew a quick picture and gave it to Ann. Then, he took the vial. Jo followed him out of the room. Ann took Andy’s hand and closed her eyes, entering into his trance. The land she saw was strange. It was a mix of both worlds, and while it wasn’t dark, all the colors were muted, and it gave the feeling of dusk. There were screams and other voices in the distance, voices she still heard in her own nightmares. She found him sitting inside a shielded dome, cradling someone in his arms. Whoever it was had been beaten beyond recognition. He didn’t look up as she approached. “Andy,” she said stopping outside the dome. “Drepal, I told you to go away. Leave us alone,” he snarled. Ann realized it was her he was holding, how she must’ve looked in her own trance. “I’m not Drepal, Sweetie. Shunati put us into a deep sleep. She chose not to wake. Look at me.” He did. He must’ve seen something in her that made him believe she was the real Annlonna. The figure in his arms disappeared. The shield came down, and she went to him. As soon as she entered the radius of the dome, the shield went back up. She knelt beside him. “I don’t understand. Last time you were hurt so bad,” he said. “The last time?” She was confused. “The last time you were in a trance, when you killed Lyra.” “I’m not in a trance,” she said. “But this place.” “You’re the one in the trance, when you cast that sleep spell.” “Me?” Ann nodded. “But why were you injured?” “Perhaps your worst nightmare is losing me to a trance.” “And those screams? Those are from the nightmare Drepal showed me.” “I think that dream hit a little too close to home with your mom.” “Why are you here? Why not wake me?” “Pt’this tried. You wouldn’t wake up. I came in to find the problem. Let the shield down and let’s go. The dragons want to get back to Torthoc before they start getting sick.”

Another fantastic chapter! I love how creative your unique fantasy world is... it has it's own set of rules for magic that are unlike anything I've heard of before. I borrow (i.e. steal) mine from Dungeons & Dragons, because I'm not as inventive!

Thanks. When I'd first started this series, I was leaning towards a D&D feel, but I don't know enough about it and wanted the freedom to do things differently if I needed to so I decided to make up my own magic system.
