Wow! This is unexpected!

I took a course on Chinese painting once, and we looked at an awful lot of stuff that was very similar to this. I have some criticism, etc. but let me preface this by saying that I think that this is aiming to fit into a Japanese tradition rather than a Chinese one, so everything that follows might be dead wrong. That being said, here is what I've got:

Chinese brush and ink paintings are pretty much entirely about confidence. The brush should go directly across the paper with each stroke, never hesitating or going over lines. It is considered worse to make a line hesitatingly than to make one that is in the wrong place. In that sense, this image has a very nice structure, but the brush strokes are visibly unsure, with a lot of obvious starts and stops. The history of how the image was painted is clearly visible: When you see ink pooling unevenly or bristles sticking out, this is a good sign that you hesitated.

So yeah, in this style, the quality of the line trumps everything else.

By the way, I absolutely can NOT do this, so I can't say how to achieve the results I am talking about. Some of the branches in the lower left look more confident, and the strokes are cleaner, so whatever was going on there is what you should try to keep up.

I thank you for your comment and your constructive criticism. You have a good eye and immediately recognized my beginners mistakes. In my later painted pictures I think I did better. In my new attempts I will try to follow your advice.

I wish you a nice weekend
