Indigo and her Pet
Some history on Indigo.
Indigo has been used in Europe to dye fabrics since ancient times. The dye is named for its origin: indigo is derived from the Greek indicón, "the Indian". The natural plant pigment was originally obtained predominantly from the Indian dye plant and imported to Europe. Until the Middle Ages, indigo was the only known blue dye.
In 1870, the German chemist Adolf von Baeyer succeeded in producing the dye fully synthetically for the first time. Suddenly, indigo was much cheaper and could be used on a larger scale. Levi Straus used it, for example, to dye the jeans he invented in 1873.
