Description
Jack looked at his father on the bed.
The old fellow was in great pain, taking no notice of his surroundings or visitor.
What could he say? Anything he said would be just noisy trivia compared with what his father was feeling. What was the point? he looked down at his feet.
“Is that really you?” the old man asked.
Jack raised his head; but his father’s gaze was fixed on a space to the left of his bed, not on Jack; and the lines of pain that had been etched on his face had disappeared.
“Who are you talking to?” Jack asked.
Arthur ignored him.
“Your face keeps changing,” he said, “ I keep seeing people I know and then – but it is you, isn’t it?”
“Who is it?” Jack asked.
"Her,” Arthur replied.
“Who?”
Arthur, I am she whom you have ever sought, she whom you have ever worshipped as a goddess; she whom you have always wanted and needed to make your life complete.
The light voice rang in his head and Jack stared and saw nothing and no-one.
“Let me see you as you really are,” Arthur said, “I see too many faces.”
I am one and I am all; wife, girlfriend, mother, daughter; to every man I am the other half, the feminine part that is missing from him to make him a complete creature.
“There are too many for me. I have always seen you as one person.”
For a fleeting moment Jack thought he saw a tall figure robed in a blue dress over which flowed her long chestnut hair. And then there was nothing.
“Dad?” he said “did you hear anything, did you see someone?” But there was no answer.
Arthur was lying very still, his eyes closed and his face wreathed not in pain but in smiles.

Poignant and true.

yep, and it is probably going to happen to a lot more people sooner than they want owing to the incompetent way governments are responding to C19... all in the name of business

Very provoking story, Shaun. I wonder when nearing my end in this realm will I hear more clearly my mother's voice...
And Paul_Gormley's comment sends a chill down my spine. We humans tend to botch enough as it is (especially since 2016), but if we let C19 run out its ugly course...

The gritty texturing on all the surfaces in this render certainly tells you this is a grim setting and an unhappy event that's unfolding. But at least the old father left the world with peace and fulfillment when the blue angel came to take his hand.
