Now something completely different than I normally post. Just to make it clear right at the beginning: i am not someone who glorifies war. Every war is awful and unnecessary, because it scatters suffering, pain, misery, death and destruction and this doesn't change whether it is a "war of right against wrong" or a war of "liberation". There are always and everywhere innocent people who die and families are destroyed. As horrible as the regime of the 3rd Reich was, as horrible were the bombings of the Allies against the civilian population in the German cities (and I say this as a non-German). Although wars are something cruel, they have always been a motor for technical developments and interesting from a technical point of view. For example, the Spanish Civil War was still started with biplanes and a few years later the first jet planes flew across the sky. As a boy I was always very interested in this time and as an aviation fan I was especially interested in the development of aviation. So the need to face the enemy in air combat with something equal or even better gave birth to the strangest developments. But there were also very advanced designs that did not find the necessary support and were only used in very small numbers or not at all due to the short-sightedness or ignorance of the responsible authorities. One such development was the Westland Whirlwind MK I. Conceptually ahead of its time with a sleek and really beautiful and clean design, the Whirlwind had excellent flight characteristics as a fighter and fighter-bomber and the four 20mm cannons in the nose offered an immense firepower at that time, which was unique until the appearance of the Bristol Beaufighter. It was small and fast, but suffered from being designed for the wrong engines and the authorities accused it of having dangerous characteristics due to high landing speeds. In fact the Rolls Royce Peregrine I was really a bad and under developed engine, plagued by many teething troubles, but the accusation of being dangerous because of the high landing speed was not confirmed by the squadrons where the whirlwind was in use. Although the stall speed was still a respectable 153km/h with the Fowler flaps extended, it was easy to land and the two engines were an increased chance of returning to the home base even after heavy fire. As much as it was criticized by ignorant people, as much it was loved by the pilots who flew it. Only 112 of the Whirlwind were built and the last survivors were scrapped after the war. For me the Whirlwind is one of the most beautiful piston driven fighter planes (yes I like it even more than the so famous Spitfire). I always was a fan of Airplanes with T-Tail and the "Whirly" fit's perfectly in here.
