Description
I have always loved and had a deep admiration for the Native American culture. All through elementary school, and way up into my college years, it seems I was always intrigued to learn about their customs and way of life.
Through my reading, with each new turn of every page brought a new and wonderous observation about these majestic native warriors of the plains. It is through them that I have become very familiar with the practices surrounding the Sundance and Ghost Dances. Moreover, some of the spiritual symbolisms that were used during a particular ceremony.
In this print “Sacred Journey” I have reflected on the “Medicine Wheel”. This wheel in the Sioux culture can represent the four directions: north, south, east and west. The teachings of the four directions start with the east, or yellow, quadrant and run clockwise around the circle. Red symbolizes the south, black the west and white the north.
The young warrior in the illustration is on a vision quest. He is accompanied by his spirit animal and the medicine wheel that guide him all through his journey through life and beyond into eternity.
