Description

Concerning the present coronavirus (COVID-19) making its way around the earth, please do not listen to individuals on social media (a true social plague), nor, if you are in the USA, to highly placed individuals (like the ignorant you know who), but do go to the CDC website for current information. Historical Background of the Plague Doctor (From Wikipedia): A plague doctor was a medical physician who treated victims of the bubonic plague. In times of epidemics, these physicians were specifically hired by towns where the plague had taken hold. Since the city was paying their salary, they treated everyone: both the wealthy and the poor. However, some plague doctors were known to charge patients and their families additional fees for special treatments or false cures. Typically, they were not experienced physicians or surgeons at all; rather they were often either second-rate doctors unable to otherwise run a successful medical practice or young physicians seeking to establish themselves in the industry. They rarely cured their patients; rather, they served to record a count of the number of people contaminated for demographic purposes. Some plague doctors wore a special costume. The garments were invented by Charles de L'Orme in 1630 and were first used in Napoli, but later spread to be used throughout Europe. The protective suit consisted of a light, waxed fabric overcoat, a mask with glass eye openings and a beak shaped nose, typically stuffed with herbs, straw, and spices. Plague doctors would also commonly carry a cane to examine and direct patients without the need to make direct contact with the patient. The scented materials included juniper berry, ambergris, roses, mint leaves, camphor, cloves, laudanum, myrrh, and storax. Due to the primitive understanding of disease at the time, it was believed this suit would sufficiently protect the doctor from miasma while tending to patients. Plague doctors could not generally interact with the general public because of the nature of their business and the possibility of spreading the disease; they could also be subject to quarantine. Art and music were the first forms of information and news of all types. I always enjoy your art and commentary, Barb. I knew very little about Plague Doctors, thanks for teaching me something new. Keep it up.

This guy is both cool and scary in his dirty robe. I like the depth of field focus and the creepy rat with the red eye. Stay safe and healthy (and well informed)!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.... Keep the plebs in a state of confusion and uncertainty, and it's much easier to control them...

Awesome work on this, Barb! You've done your homework - it's always great to see work that has been researched like this. 👍

Superb atmo, great image about this epidemic disaster of the past, Barb!

Now, the coronavisus is very scary , there are many sick people in France, and it is not certain that our leaders are capable of handling this crisis.

First case in Tennessee announced this week in the county where my granddaughter teaches. Schools closed for two days for "deep cleaning", but all it takes is one infected person to spread it again. Really relevant ART here. (Be careful in New York's crowded conditions.)

Great picture and great advice on using "proper" sources on the Corona virus. I heard of plague doctors but never knew the history behind them.

Odd that the plague doctors' "uniform" includes a beak, or is that perhaps where the term "quack" comes from?! Cool image and history tidbits!

yes, a fitting image for right now. A very spooky, dark image with blues and purples that feel like very deep night, and a rat skulking in the shadows (with illumined eyes---really nice touch!). I'd never read about these strange doctors, I knew there was false healing during such times, but these figures are really otherworldly. You captured him just as he must've looked back then, like some eerie cult figure stalking in the night. The pic has a bit of blur capturing the mystery one would see in a night moment like this, and he's reaching out to spy the rat amidst the falling leaves. It captures what it must've felt like to live in those times. (They canceled plays and gatherings then too...eerily close to where we seem to be heading now.) Very well done. Let's hope we don't get that far, today. (Among other things, some of our leaders today are a lot more scary than this guy...)
