Description
(April 8, 1300) Dante and Virgil are in the third circle of hell where we meet the figure of Cerberus who is the guard. Cerberus dog that has three heads and red eyes, long and fearsome claws. Cerberus is described as a horrible monster, who constantly agitates until he bites into someone.
This image was created for a series of images about the " Divina Commedia " By Dante Alighieri. Yesterday 25 march was a day dedicated to Dante Alighieri.
I find it auspicious in this terrible hell that we live to quote the last words of the hell with which Dante leaves leaving him behind:
Lo duca e io per quel cammino ascoso
intrammo a ritornar nel chiaro mondo;
e sanza cura aver d'alcun riposo,
salimmo sù, el primo e io secondo,
tanto ch'i' vidi de le cose belle
che porta 'l ciel, per un pertugio tondo.
E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.
More or less this is the explanation :
Virgil and I entered that hidden path
to be able to return to the world radiated by the sun;
and without worrying about giving us a little rest,
so much was the desire to go outside,
we started to go up, he first and I behind him,
until I got a glimpse of some of all those things
wonderful that the sky offers to the view, through a round hole in the rock.
So in the end we went out to see the stars again.
We will all go out to see the stars and in good health!

I have a strong impression that we are living in that hell, that is guarded by the limitless greed of those who control us (the international bankers). Most people are not even aware that they are tightly controlled. Well made, but so symbolically scary picture!

Giuliano, I'm thrilled that you're illustrating the Comedia---I can't think of another artist who can do it better. (Are you working with other artists, or are you doing all the art yourself?) This image is stunning. You captured the wildly schizoid nature of Cerbero. You've colored his heads in eerie metallic hues, you've split his middle head as if he's falling apart. (One eye is suspended in air.) His right-side head is almost terrifying: You gave it a glass and metal texture. And his mouth looks positively rabid (arrabiata?).
This must be seen full size: You have skeletons on the ground, skulls everywhere, and a prism-like texture everywhere---it's a little like the Ninth Circle, because everything seems trapped in glass and mirrors (the way the Ninth Circle is trapped in ice). And Cerbero's teeth and claws are pure steel, as if they can claw through anything. You end your text with the conclusion of the Inferno, to say we will all find the sky and stars again, after going through the last circle of hell (Vexilla regis prodeunt inferni...). I remember that Dante and Virgil had to crawl and climb for a long time before they saw the stars. I hope your beleaguered country has a much shorter climb before it sees the stars once more. Brilliant as always, Giuliano. If you ever publish a version of the Comedia---with your art---I'll buy it in a second.

One of my favourite literary works of art, the Divine Comedy. This is great work! All the different colours and textures really give such a feeling of movement and chaos. Wonderful work! :)
