Description

In these days I have felt the desire to try my hand at creating a work on a classic and sacred theme of art. The point of view I have chosen is unusual, viewed from the back, not out of irreverence but rather to underline that the event is for the people in front (represented by the various crosses) united by their worries and in need of help. A particular dedication that is for all those who cause COVID are facing their Calvary without references to religion whatever it is but only for immense human solidarity.

Right now human solidarity is what matters the most. It doesn't really matter what you believe in, all we really have is each other.

Most beautiful idea with the view from the back - us looking over the Sempione to you.

Powerful emotional picture! I hope that there is solidarity, but this is not what I am observing in the world ... at every level!

Stunning, Giuliano. I fully understand your dedicating this "without references to religion whatever it is but only for immense human solidarity". Atheists can be moved by this. You've portrayed the three crucifixions, but you also created suggestions of other souls crucified, via the long flowing limbs throughout your image, from left to right. It's as if the whole world is going through crucifixion. And we see the skulls on the bottom ('golgotha'), in deep blues, like reminders. And you've given exquisite fractal ornament to several of the crosses, which make them beautiful and rich. There is, in other words, a promise of beauty and richness behind all this.

The overall feeling is of a repeated call for mercy. And you've presented the 2 thieves and Jesus in broken pieces---this is especially so in their arms---as if they're surrendering their lives to a light well beyond the image. (Christ looks upwards as if to say, "I'm ready, take me".) It's very powerful. In the original narrative, Golgotha was a desolate place. But, in your vision, it is teeming with the ghosts and calls of humanity, crying out for compassion and togetherness (the solidarity you speak of). Very powerful and moving.

Even without reading the description I see the religious reference. Also I do like the different angle you took from the traditional art related to it. This really needs to be hanging in an art gallery when we get through this pandemic.
