Description
I haven’t done a Classical theme for a while, so for today’s bit of historical obscurity we return to the Mediterranean.
Cynane was half-sister to Alexander the Great, the daughter Philip of Macedon and an Illyrian princess. She was trained in the arts of war in the Illyrian tradition, becoming a formidable fighter and commander of a large segment of her brother’s army. On Alexander’s death, she became embroiled in the wars of succession and was put to death on the orders of the regent Perdiccas (he came to a sticky end too but that’s another story).
The Macedonian strategist Polyaenus wrote "Cynane, the daughter of Philip was famous for her military knowledge: she conducted armies, and in the field charged at the head of them. In an engagement with the Illyrians, she with her own hand slew Caeria their queen; and with great slaughter defeated the Illyrian army"; which makes her one of the only women of classical antiquity to have known to have killed an enemy on the field of battle.

This is a marvellous composition Joe; using the greek items to advantage to create a depth-filled stage and then leading the eye back in by picking up the dying rays of the sun on the column. She would be just as 'formidable' without a sword in her hand :)
