Description

The gen'rul hisself put me on watch tonight. I ain' a-gonna fail him. If any o' the enemy show up, I'll be ready to sound the alarm. I joined this man's army the day we declared independence. It was heady times for everyone: we knew war was a-comin'... but with the British? The Germans? The Indians? We didnt know. So we had to be ready. When the Brits showed up in their fancy ships and their fancy uniforms, a lot of us wanted to cut 'em down right there in the harbor. But the Gen'rul said no. War has rules, he says. And we were gonna follow them. You dont question the orders. Our first day into battle, a bunch of people came down from the city to watch, like it was some sort of Grand Event. We were lined up on one side. The British were on the other. The gen'ruls met in the middle for tea, then strolled back like it was a normal Sunday goin' to meetin' day and signaled the attack. I lost five friends that day. God above only knows how many died all told. But at the end of it, we picked up our dead, as did the Brits, and we waited for sunrise the next mornin' to commence again. And so it went. We won some. They won some. And a buncha people died, but in the end we won, and everyone got to go home and celebrate. Well, everyone but me, that is. I'm on watch. I got that order from the Gen'rul himself, and I aint one to abandon my post. That's my orders. I dont care how many Rebs try to make it through the line. I'll gun 'em all down myself if'n I have to. I didn' join this man's army just so a buncha people down south could up and decide they didnt want to be Americans anymore. Ain' nothin' "civil" about this war, nossir. Rules? There aint any rules. Just kill or be killed, and I ain' about to go for the latter. So I stand on watch. They gave us the masks last night, but no one knows if they really work or not. Guess if the Krauts decide to use that "gas" they keep talkin' about, we'll find out soon enough. I heard from buddies of mine that this stuff kills you right then and there. I cant imagine a more horrible way t'go. So that's why I gotta stay on watch. Hear that? Yeah, that's our tanks, goin' in t' clear up what's left of Dresden after our bombers flattened it yesterday. And you know them Nazis are gonna wanna give at least something back t'us for doin' that. So I gotta stand on watch. Shh! Get down! I swear, no matter how quiet ye'are, those Japs can hear you breathin'. And that's all they need to shoot ye down. Stay low. Stay low. And watch out for the tunnels. Those Cong love their tunnels, and you never know when one is gonna open up right under ye. Ya gotta watch out, every moment of every day and night. Yeah, there are times when I hate this. We started out right, as we should. Then it all got... I dont know. Confusing. I dont know who the enemy is any more. Seems like we've fought everyone on th' planet, sometimes twice over. And it never stops, 'cause no one ever wins. But I stay on watch. It's my job, because it's my orders. And you dont question the orders. No Taliban is gonna get past me, I can tell you that. I'll take out those damn towelheads before they have time to drop to their knees towards Mecca. I dont care that they used t'be our allies during the Big Cold One. They're not now. Just like them Germans. Oh yeah, say they're on our side, but I got two wars that say dif'rent. Just like them Japanese. They're just waitin' for the right opportunity... just like them Rebs... and them British... Cant trust any of them, not any more. So I stay on watch.

Denn es regiert die Welt

Nur Falschheit und das Geld ...

Reminds me of a man I met at a frail care facility. He was caught up in a world where reality came and went and he was preparing to fetch his men in the surrounding hills where they were still fighting (only thing he'd find in the surrounding hills would've been baboons and other smaller animals). And there's so much you can make of the scene. But he was happy, and it seemed that was the most important.
