Description

In Paradise Dante cannot be led by Virgil who has not been baptized so here he meets Beatrice who will be his guide. Beatrice the woman he ideally loved in Florence is already dead when he writes the Divina Commedia. I have adapted an old image that lent itself well to Beatrice's vision, partly imagined as Venus partly as a precious soul placed in the space between the seven skies.

Beautiful image - I like the mix of gold and blue and the repeating pattern of the gold character in the bubbles. Very surreal.

Sometimes, I feel like that; in pieces with missing parts ... in my head, and seeing my missing pieces in the eyes of those who look at me. This picture expresses that feeling, scarily too well! Impressive imagination and technique mastering! Breathtaking!

this image seeped into me, slowly, and it "grabbed" me. It's very moving. Beatrice is ephemeral: She's broken up by the spiritual atmosphere around her. Yet, at the same time, she's very visceral: She's made of a gold-plated metal. She's both ethereal and physical...And I love how you conceived her: She's made of ribbons of light, ribbons of matter, and of spirit. And she seems to be reaching for something...perhaps she's trying to absorb the mystery of the seven spheres. You placed her reflection in each sphere, and each reflection is different. Also, you placed a very intense sun in all the spheres (the sun isn't fully visible in some of the spheres, but that's only because you didn't show those spheres in full). And a beautiful render of the spheres: They have spheres inside them (I assume 7 in each). And your background is an airy sea with beautiful clouds rising out of it. Again, you've used a timeless flat sea with sky to communicate a deep and peaceful eternity.

Unlike some of your Dante illustrations, this feels more 'general', like an introduction to Beatrice. When we studied Dante, years ago, we always thought Beatrice was like Petrarca's Laura (though we didn't know if Beatrice was an actual human being, back then). In your image, you've portrayed her as a soul wandering through paradise, half human, and half 'air'. I love the way you divided her body into "suggestions" and "hints". In all your work, Giuliano, we can explain parts of it...but then we fall silent at your deep intuition: At that point, we simply absorb your art's truth, and we let it shine. This image feels very true...and beautiful, mysterious and touching. Truly, your Dante illustrations are masterful. I've not seen anything like them, anywhere...
