Description
Once the gondolas were characterized by bright colors, in the 16th century noble families competed with the "most precious and most striking gondola". As this was becoming excessive, the Republic of the Serenissima was worried about this desire to show off luxury at all costs and at the end of the 16th century it imposed black as the color of all gondolas. Black was the color of elegance not of mourning.
In the annual "Historical Regatta" event, the most awaited race is that of gondolini, which as in the past are characterized by different bright colors.
