Description

Telka and Koit set out to travel the world, with their trusty steed pulling their home on wheels! ==NOTES== I’ve been working on modeling a draft-style harness for a while now, so that a horse could plausibly pull large wagons like World Travels or Boundless Journey, but when I put the harness (and bridle) on the HW Horse and then put the World Travels wagon into position, the wagon seemed far too large for the horse. So I decided to set up a full scene to see if that helped. (Not really.) I tried scaling the wagon down a bit, but that lowers the height of the "hitch" piece (and thus the shafts) too far. I’ve already modified the hitch to remove the built-in straps, so I suppose I could try bending the shafts upwards. I also made a singletree for the harness traces to attach to, as well as a (plausible if not realistic) way for the singletree to attach to the wagon’s front axel, since the wagon had nowhere for traces to attach to — and it’s the traces that do the actual pulling, not the shafts. If I scale down the whole wagon, I’ll have to re-do the singletree and axel connectors too. Or I could go a different route and instead set up a team harness (with doubletree), so that the full-size wagon would be pulled by a pair of horses, not just one. I was kinda hoping to finish figuring out how to rig the harness I made to adapt to different types of wagons (and horse shapes) before I dove into figuring out how to make a team harness, but this is already the biggest modeling project I’ve done to date, so why not make it bigger?! I also modeled the bridle, but more in the style of a classic English snaffle bridle than a traditional draft driving bridle, because digital horses don’t need blinkers, after all :-) I haven’t yet figured out how to rig the bridle so that the reins are as flexible as possible, so why not add a second bridle and set of reins to the challenge! Beautiful scene - good luck with your project! (Instead of making the wagon smaller - you could've made the horse bigger...)

Making the horse bigger creates the same problem of putting the wagon's hitch out of alignment with the horse's harness. I think part of the reason the wagon looks too big for the horse is that it's set rather high up, due to very tall springs, and a wagon like this should probably have a lower center of gravity. I can modify it for my own use, but I'll still need to figure out how to make it work for others who want to use my harness!

I love this scene! But I wish it was easier to fix the scaling issue with the wagon.

What do you think of the idea of setting it up so that a team could pull the wagon? I'd have to make a new hitch piece with a center pole to take the place of the one with shafts that comes with the wagon, but I'd also have to do that if I went the route of scaling down the wagon. I suppose the advantage of setting it up for a team is that I'd have to figure out how to make the parts that connect a team harness, and then the team harness could be used for other wagons. The real question is: if it was pulled by a team of draft horses, would this wagon still look too big?

Beautiful scene! Love the horse and wagon. Have you ever used the free 3d program, blender. You could bring it into blender and take it apart and resize it to your hearts content. Then export the individual parts and parent them in poser. Just a thought. I do that all the time with my cars.

Thanks for the suggestion! I do sometimes use Blender, but my favorite modeling app by far is Cheetah3D for Mac. That's what I use to make all my freebies and also the horse harness in this render. I also used it to modify the hitch piece that comes with the World Travels wagon. But if I modify the rest of the wagon, then I'm the only one who can use it (since I can't distribute modified geometry). I'm hoping to make a draft harness that others can use with the wagon as is, without needing to change the wagon (or the horse), so I just need to keep on working on it! But I do enjoy tinkering with models in my modeling app, as it sounds like you do too! :-)
