Description


On Benver's request, the MOLA DEM landscape with the Mars Rover rendered again with the ALS (anaglyph lens system) bolted onto the Bryce camera, the toe-in angle (eye squint) is set to 1.6° to align the foreground, which is 285 BU (Bryce Units) away from the camera, to the screen level. Red/Cyan goggles needed to see the 3D effect.

Very criptic indeed Hans ! Unless it isn.t a secret to fully explain ( Mola DEM I can search myself ) in tekst what it is all about in that case please point out where i can find your data SCRIPT ? to put it into practice even if I could I,ll stay with my OWN MODEST methods , i am impressed with your result I am still study the consistence in depthworking wich in your case is flawlessly! Rest me to say that I still wil join you in your Martian litle 3D martian adventure as best to my experimental methodic abilities as an amator . I ask for some patience though because I have diverse other 3D genres to upload but I have already something under construktion concerning Mars and some other ideas for it and although it is not meant as a competition or a challange I will hope not disappoint you nevertheless I feel a bit challenge stress in my stomac now I have seen
the Rover stands out in the field where it stopped working for NASA

One remark Hans, if I may so bold : Olympus Mons is a huge Monster but too present it in pyramidal form on that distance ? to my knowlegde it is flattende op top m now the Rover seems a relict of an egyptian grave robber ( i am just kidding ! )

Ben, thank you for your reply. Indeed, it is always a bit difficult to get the area to height ratio right from DEMs. And sometimes we exaggerate a bit for the effect. So don't plan your Mars visit with my representation.

20 years ago, before we had the ALS (and ALST, etc.) I rendered twice with the camera a bit left and right, then put the renders colour coded together. The ALS is a lens made from Bryce primitives - well, two lenses, a mirror and two colour filters. It can be put in front of the camera like a lens on a SLR camera. Looking at a near object, the eyes squint and get parallel when looked at an object at or farther than around 15 metres away. So the lenses within the lens set can be rotated a bit and this rotation determines at which distance an object appears at the screen level. The eyes are around 7 cm horizontally apart. One lens group can be moved left and right. If you move that lens farther off, you can exaggerate the 3D-effect as if you were a giant and when moved together you have the visual effect of a small animal.

Your method creating a distant map to use for making the anaglyph is old and well known. The advantage of that method is that you don't need two images and thus can create a 3D impression also on an painting made very long ago - which cannot be done otherwise.

By the way, I hardly show anaglyphs in the gallery because there are only few with red/cyan goggles to appreciate the view.
