I have been travelling 3 months threw Afghanistan, from east to west and north to south. I am not sure that these Sunni fundamentalist men, helped by the CIA and US dollars, were fighting for freedom. Don't forget that Ben Laden was fighting then in Afghanistan. Were they fighting for freedom? Which kind of Freedom? Freedom for their wives who have to wear their tchador ( or tchadri) ? Freedom for the young girls married ("sold") against a gift? Freedom for the human rights? Freedom for the Hazaras ( or Hazaragi ), Shiites, who were kind of slaves then? You show a romantic image, with a beautiful man, probably a Pashtun. These men were not fighting for freedom! But, of course, the invaders from the north were not fighting for freedom too !
