One thing of note....with the mesh I used Scanconvert instead of the default Raytrace...and the render was far far faster, with no difference that I could see in the output. I'm not entirely happy with the result as I created a mesh with a flat base which is evident bottom left. It should have had pointed faces below the Origin of 0,0,0....then any gaps wouldn't have been seen. Theres also the point that MJT...should have had the culling of unused polygons where it overlaps itself. Something that never made it to a release or even Alpha :-(
