... I'm cleaning up after a flood in my basement studio... After several days of rain, once again, I find myself sloshing around in what was once a pleasant place to create my art.. Not so much anymore. This is the third time this has happened since 2017, and while neither this or the last one were nearly as severe as in 2017, it's still a giant pain in the backside, and I'm getting tired of it. Strike three - I'm out.
Thankfully after the one in 2017, I had the good sense to put the computers - and anything else that could be damaged - up off the floor on stands. But the fact remains that every time this happens I have to do a clean-up and replace a number of damaged tiles (see bottom photo). They're not that expensive, but I'm still getting tired of this - and there's something else that's bothering me...
It appears that the water is seeping up from UNDER the basement floor. That concerns me. With all the work I did back in 2017 - all the waterproofing I did - it doesn't seem to be doing much good. I don't know if there's a void under the foundation where water collects when the ground gets saturated or what. But I'm not all that interested in spending thousands of $$ on foundation work.
Anyway - on to the main reason for this post.... I'll probably be scarce for a couple weeks. I will be back, and that's a promise. And I will be working on more of the TNA story. But there are a number of things I need to do with this house. Aside from the fact it's becoming an increasingly expensive money-pit, there are other issues with the surrounding area. This neighborhood has been on a downward spiral for the last few years; and that spiral seems to be getting steeper.
Where we're located, we're surrounded by increasing noise levels from busy thoroughfares. To the south are two major highways, I-70 and Mo. 40 Highway. To the north is 39th St, and the the west is Sterling Ave. Both Sterling and 39th carry a lot of traffic, and of course every 10th car seems to have a 500-watt amp and 20-inch sub-woofers stuffed in the trunk and cranked to full volume. That's in addition to at least 2 or 3 "neighbors" that delight in driving up and down the street with that bone-jarring, window-rattling, base-heavy rap-crap.
Suffice it to say Jo and I are both ready to find someplace to spend the rest of our lives where we can actually ENJOY our surroundings. With that in mind, I'm going to be doing a lot of work on this place - beyond repairs from the latest flood. Once I get a couple high-priority things addressed, I'll be back to posting and commenting - it should only be a week or two at the longest.

Ah Rod, that is terrible news. Both you and Jo will be in my thoughts. All the best for the house repairs....... If I can be of any help in any way, just sing out mate. If I lived in the US, I would come give ya a hand! Stay positive, stay safe and both of you take care. PS. Might be time to move house.........

I'm so sorry about the flooded floor again. Owning a home is expensive but having to repair and replace the same thing over and over... yeah, that really sucks. (with us it's the roof) Take care, stay safe and I'll wish for dry weather for you.

Oh, Rod Not again! I can see how that would be a pain in the ass. Haven't you wanted to sell the house for a long time, or am I wrong? I have a house myself, where the basement is always damp. I've been fighting against the mould for years, but as long as I don't dig around the house and fill the ditch with gravel and lay a drainage, my fight is in vain. Don't give up.

. I once worked nights and weekends as a DJ to pay for college. I rented a cheap basement apartment because my Landlord, who lived upstairs, understood I needed to practice and integrate new songs into my library. He also was never there. The house sat at the bottom of a hill. I remember many mornings rolling out of bed half asleep and putting my feet on a flooded floor after a heavy rain. I would sit there burning with rage. Sorry, Rod :-(

Well, isn't this just the pits...Have you ever thought of waterproofing the foundation floor...it would mean removing your tiles and installing a new tiles--or perhaps installing a sump hole? If you want to sell the house, this basement flooding situation will lower your asking price significantly...just a thought. Good luck with this latest endeavor and pray for less rain.

highly understand that frustration Rod.. every few years Brian needs the plumber to come over and fix the backup he has, you do the laundry and all of a sudden a big back up and basement gets water. not nearly what you.ve been having but still a pain and smelly. wish I had a answer to fix that issue my friend. ive seen a few houses in some areas of town with houses on bottom of hills and heavy rain caused major flood damage to them, they featured them on the ness, one house had knee high water in house single level. few weeks later you could see the water line outside his house way above the porch. take care bro and hope the best as always for you and dear Jo.

I see, above, that some others had experiences with floods too...but you've had way more than your share, and that's on top of several other hardships you've had in the recent past: You deserve a huge break. I know there's a lot of work fixing your place up (for sale). It's a big deal, and I can only wish you and Jo tons of ease and success with it. You're a real light here, and everyone who knows you knows that to the toes: I hope you get it all back. I wish you and Jo great success in putting this madness to rest for good, and hope you come out on the other end, shining. You'll be missed here! Oh no!! Don't you have a sump pump installed in your basement and a backup sump pump for when the power is out... also you need 8ft. - 25ft. downspout extensions to divert the water away from the foundation. As for your neighbor playing loud music call the cops and tell them you heard gunshots, then when they show up tell them it was his music, not real gunshots but they were so loud you thought they were real.... they'll impound his car.

That sucks! Water is a blessing and a curse at times. They say if some is good more is better. Not so when it comes to water and flooding. My roof keeps leaking and I repaired it several times. I just did some repair work again today. Wish you the best what ever you do. Good luck!

Hey Rod! SO sorry to hear you have water issues.... when the water seeps thru the floor, it's usually due to the water table rising and forcing water thru the concrete. The fix is expensive.

That sucks big time. Good luck. A friend had a the same issue and had a "french drain" put in around his house. Essentially they trenched around his house and added gravel to fill in and some piping too, I think. And of course he has a sump pump in the basement too. It cost him a bundle but he did it a few years after he bought the place and he's been there for nearly 20 years, so an investment. It sounds like it might be time to find a place in a slightly more remote area for you. It might be more fun to look for a house rather than a repairman

what a bummer. working on floors is not something I care about doing. do on occasion, but with seat cushions for my knees. I got the tree behind me and waiting for the city to collect the monthly curb pickup of large items. when I worked at large multi-million dollar homes, the owners told me that the city is very prompt in doing the monthly pickup. oh! Richard they pay buck-loads of taxes and get better service. I will be watching for your return

Wellpoint. The installer drives a corrosion-protected pipe deep into the ground near the house where the groundwater is collecting. A sensor installed with the pipe determines when the groundwater is rising and activates a pump that removes the water before it penetrates your basement, ending your repeating battle against mold and mildew. Its MUCH cheaper than repair or even repetitive recovery efforts.

hmmmmmm.... Interesting... I might look into that, but right now we're both at a point where relocating is looking like a better option for more reasons than just the flooding.. I might have a BTS soon where I'll discuss some options..

May God be with you and Jo! I pray you get it all sorted out and can find that dream place that will be more conducive to the lifestyle you would like to get used to! That is terrible to have that flooding going on! Here in the Phoenix, very few people have basements. I think the main reason for that is the soil is like concrete. LOL! Literally. My brother and nephew were here a couple years ago and helped me put in a new divider fence. Took us forever to dig the holes for four posts. Dig a little, pour water in the hole, let it set for couple hours, dig a little more, well, you get the picture. So take care, Rod and we will see you on the flip side.

Oh no problem, just drill a big hole in the floor so the water can drain into the ground. ;) I know I know, it doesn't work like that. Wish it did it would make things easier for you. Sorry to you keep having all the problems with flooding and I can appreciate your concern, water seeping underneath the flooring or into walls, etc., can cause a lot of damaged. I know from experience. Hopefully you can find a solution for this so it does not continue to be a headache and source of concern.
