Description
My apartment complex is a virtual United Nations, all ethnicities, races and creeds comprise the tenants, all living together in peace and respect for one another. It is an example all should emulate. It's a wonderful community, and I am so pleased to call it my home.
Siby, one of our porters and an emigre from Africa, would carry the American flag and run around our courtyard green, every night, rain or shine, for several months, to give thanks and recognition to all our first responders and hospital workers during the horrific Covid outbreak in NYC.
All things must come to an end (except this Covid, it seems), so last night, June 12 at 7pm, was Siby's last run. It was a wonderful celebration. A glorious cacophony of pots and bells clanging, hearty cheers, whistles, and, like all nights as Siby finished his run and stood at attention, a saxophone started playing the national anthem. To honor this final celebration, even the local police precinct (less than a block from us) sent a squad car, and the local fire department sent their hook and ladder, each sounding their respective sirens.
We will miss this daily interlude, a bright spot each day during these most trying times, to honor those who gave so much to save so many.

This is so incredibly cool and moving! Why can't it always be like this - everywhere? Wonderful captures of a moment that gives us all a bit of hope and a ray of light in these dark times, Barb. God bless you Siby.

Lovely tribute, agree with Rods, why can it not be like this at all times. We have stopped clapping too.

Being in your big city of NY I can see why you would have such a large ethnic groups. Cool three pack of photos Barb. I also agree with Rod's statement. Stay safe.

That is awesome, to bad the rest of the US can't follow suit, great captures!

It's too bad the rest of the WORLD can't follow suit...my little corner of NYC is not unusual for the greater NYC. Overall, the folks of NYC, though not perfect, are pretty civilized and considerate. I have traveled much of the world, and there is no other place I would rather be.

A wonderful tribute. This was a touching thing for him to do. I'm happy that you love your home and the people you call neighbors. May you always look out for one another.

in the short time I've had the pleasure of seeing you here, and seeing your work and reading your words, it's no surprise that you live in a place that brings the world together in celebration and gratitude. It seems hand-made for you (and for people like you). A wonderful story, and I love the pics---the people are all so content and joyful, and there's space, but they're still together. (Proving that physical space doesn't have to mean emotional distance.) Love the people clapping for the fire truck and police car---there is harmony, it hasn't gone away! And I love what you wrote about NYC...yes, from my time there, it has a global feeling and understanding that's extraordinary...I lived there in the 70s, and it was mad and crazy and just bursting with global energies and love and creativity. We have that in neighborhoods in Chicago, but NYC seemed to ooze it. Wonderful shots, wonderful story---all the more because it's true...And I hope this spirit goes on forever. Why should it stop? We shouldn't celebrate our best side every day or night? Wonderful upload, Barb, thank you.

Great photos and heartwarming to know the information behind them. It's always nice to hear about how people from different backgrounds and ethnicities can live together and show love for this country and their neighbors.
