Description

It's been a little more then a year since the release of my fifth novel, "Because the Night." But I still think about it. That was a different sort of book for me. Not because of the lesbian romance, but because the language used is a bit more, or rather, less refined. So, for a romance, it was a new experience for me. I'm a romantic at heart, so it was surprising that something so primal, could also be romantic. It's all up to the characters to tell their story, after all, and every character is unique. I know not all writers work like that. I find it puzzling, myself. I didn't know why trying to follow exercises in creative writing books always fell flat with me. I didn't know what to do when I would sit down and meticulously plan an outline, and then have such difficulty actually following it. It took many years to discover that trying to impose my imperfect will on the voice of the characters was a recipe for disaster. It is my job to listen, and to write to the best of my ability. So, even though "Because the Night" is one that I probably wouldn't talk about in a church group, I am still proud of the book. It's rough edges have nothing to do with the characters - only my lack of ability. And that lack grows less with every novel. Anyway, a year later I still think about the characters. Not TOO much, mind you. I've already committed to writing sequels to two books that were intended to be stand-alone. "Because the Night" ends the way it does so that it has less chance to require a second book. Sure, there is more story to explore. And someday, who knows? Anyway, I hope this image is thoroughly enjoyed. Two ladies, out for a ride in the night air. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RM7B3MR

Nicely romantic image indeed. 👍

It's your musings on writing that kept me around, though. I suppose I can relate to the difficulty of adhering to a pattern when your story would much rather flow in this or that direction--in fact, I'm currently still struggling to plow through my second English novella, a writing project that was probably too thoroughly planned and niftily constructed for my own good.

That said, I realized it's actually the lead characters (which I'm already acquainted with, as it's the second book in a series) that keep the project going and flowing even when I feel I've gotten myself in over my head--if that makes any sense. Your characters can truly be the golden threat that holds everything together. Listen to them, they usually know best. 😉

Indeed they do! It wasn't until I let the characters tell their own story that I was able to complete novels.
