Description
Roy was at my side.
“Are you okay?” The caretaker asked. I tried to nod but shook my head. Stupid inability to lie.
“Let’s get you away from the fence,” Roy suggested and helped me up. “You’re crazy, pushing yourself like that.” He practically carried me back inside.
“Need to stop him,” I managed.
Roy helped me drink a Powerade. I was shaking too badly to do it myself.
“You’re going to kill yourself.”
“Better me than all those women.”
“How about no one?” He started to unwrap a candy bar. I shook my head, not ready for food. His response was the same gesture I gave him when he told me to stop the spell. The caretaker chuckled.
Roy broke off a small bit of the candy bar and stuffed it in my mouth. I was tempted to spit it out, but that would be childish. I chewed it carefully and swallowed. Roy started to break off another bite.
“Not the almond yet,” I requested. It was another reason I liked these candy bars. Since they put the nut on the top, they could be separated easily.
Roy popped off the almond and stuck it in the wrapper. I felt ridiculous being fed. My hands shook as I took the candy. I nibbled at it while my strength returned.
“You didn’t get sick the last time,” Roy said.
“I’d been fasting. I barely had anything in my stomach,” I reminded him. “I’m getting better. I will be fine.” I was still shaky, but that was usually the last symptom to end. The nausea and dizziness were gone.
I ate several candy bars, saving the nuts until the end and drank four Powerades before I tried to stand.
“Are you okay now?” The caretaker asked.
“I am.”
“You said an incantation. You never said this would happen.”
“It doesn’t usually happen, only if I push too long.
“How many cameras did he pass?” I asked.
“I counted two inside and three outside,” Roy told me.
“There were five outside,” The caretaker corrected him. “He looked directly at two. All the outside cameras are doubled. We get kids sneaking in to cause trouble. They see the cameras and look away, so we put more in the direction they always look. This man looked right at two of them. He missed the last one. It will still take time to find the footage, but not anywhere near as long as going through all of them.”
“Thank you for your help,” Roy told him.
“I’ve got two daughters I don’t want this guy getting. Let me know if you need anything more.”
“We will,” Roy assured him. He helped me to the car, though by now, I’d stopped shaking. He called the chief to report what happened and was told to take me to the hospital to get checked out. There, I was told to take it easy for the rest of the day. Roy dropped me off at home, and I followed the doctor’s orders.
