Description
I came across Safina in a small sleepy harbour town, close to Santa Maria di Leuca, touting for customers for her boat.
At first I merely smiled and tried to ignore her in the way people do when unsure what is being sold, but she was a persistent little thing, skipping up to slip her arm in mine with a wide cheeky grin before proceeding to quiz me in charmingly accentuated English.
Close to, she was scarily vivacious, owing perhaps to a long gypsy skirt split to the thigh and a mane of wild hair that was home to a pleasing perfume.
I half expected to find a skiff of some sort as we slowly drew closer to her boat, but it turned out to be a repurposed fishing boat painted in bright primary colours that looked homely in ways the other prim white painted craft weren't.
"We catcha fish, yes? I cook you. Very reasonable. €25 two hours, €50 all day. Wine extra, one bottle €10.
So much for cycling as far as I could along the Italian coast, but I remember those weeks and introduction to local wines most fondly. Who knew fishing could be so much fun, or hesitant conversation in the moonlight so interesting?

I still love V4. This morph looks like Gina Lolabrigida....very authentic, Italian feel.
