Description
“You know her?” Roy asked.
“By reputation. She’s my cousin’s half-sister. He used to talk about her. She’s the finest assassin among the Unseelie, according to Puck.”
“Keep Puck out of this,” Katrine insisted.
I snorted. “Like you care about him.”
“Of course I do. He’s my brother.”
“You killed his mom.”
“I didn’t.”
“You did.”
“I did not kill Puck’s mother, your aunt.”
“Who else would have? Puck said your dad ordered the hit.”
Katrine went pale. “He thinks that? Dad didn’t. He was devastated when she died. He loved her. I don’t know who killed her, but it wasn’t me. I had nothing to do with it.”
I looked at Roy. “What about Cobra? Did they get him? What’s his real name?”
“They got him.” Roy checked his notes. “His name is Antonio.”
Katrine frowned. “Cobra? I thought that was Morisis. Wait, how did you know?” Her eyes narrowed as she looked to me. “Whiteknight. I should have known. I thought there was something fishy when those cops showed up.” She looked back at Roy. “Was that really Cobra?”
Roy nodded. “From what we can tell.”
“Morisis, Jonan, and I got along really well in chat. We exchanged numbers. Then he emailed me and said he wanted to get together in person. It was a public area, and we were just going for coffee, so I agreed. I went, and a barista came up to me and asked if I was Kat and told me someone named Jonan called and said he was running late. He bought me a coffee while I was waiting. It must have been drugged because the next thing I knew, I woke in that dungeon.” She shuddered. “Who’d have thought he was telling the truth about that thing?”
“Did he or Morisis know what you are?” I asked.
“No. I didn’t tell Mor. And Cobra was shocked when my glamour failed. He nearly wet his pants with excitement.”
“What did he want you for?”
“I don’t know. I was kept chained up in that cell. Some of the others he’d taken away. Some were gone days, others never came back. Those who did wouldn’t tell what happened. They didn’t talk at all, just sobbed and flinched at every sound or touch.”
“Will you be willing to talk to someone to give a full statement?” Roy asked.
The look she gave him made me summon a knife under the table. “I gave up being an assassin when my people disappeared. I’ve only killed in self-defense since then. But if this guy isn’t found guilty, I will kill him.”
“Katrine, let the police handle it. He won’t get off,” I insisted.
“Call me Kat. I’ll give them until after the trial.”
I relaxed a little and sent my knife away. I doubt she even knew it was there, Roy didn’t.
“Let’s get someone to take your statement,” Roy said. “Since you two are sort of related, and he’s just a consultant, it would be better if he wasn’t here for it.”
Roy led me from the room. He spoke to an officer I didn’t know and asked her to take Katrine’s statement.
