Description
“Bad news,” Sam said. “That Antonio that had your cousin wasn’t the serial killer. He was disposing of the bodies on the proptery.”
“Was the image from the cemetery video clear enough to identify the killer? Was that Cobra, I mean Antonio?” I asked Sam.
“Ruben is still going through it. He’s been busy with other things.”
“Is there anything I can do to help?”
“Sorry, no. I might let you watch with him, but I don’t want to risk anyone claiming tampering or something. This is the only thing we have that might show us who the guy is.”
“Is there anything to connect this guy to the rest of the bodies? There have been different methods of killing, and finding the bodies is like a horror scavenger hunt. Could this be the work of more than one person?”
“We have a link. Do you remember that unknown substance I found on the first few bodies? Every one of them has ingested it. It’s also been on some of their clothing as if they were forced to drink it. But I don’t know what it is. It’s organic, but it doesn’t match anything I have samples of. I sent some to the university to see if they can find it. You wouldn’t happen to have a spell, would you?”
“If you had at least half a cup worth of a pure sample, yes.”
“I’ll ask the killer to leave us some. I don’t think I have half a cup left from all of them, and it’s hardly pure.”
“Is it plant or animal-based?”
“Plant, I think.”
“Anything unique about it?”
“I can’t be sure. It appears to lower inhibitions and causes amnesia before making them pass out. But that’s speculation.”
“It sounds a little like alcohol.”
“Maybe super concentrated alcohol.”
A thought wormed its way into my head, and my stomach twisted. “Do you still have any, or did you send it all to the university?”
“I have some.”
“Enough to compare it to other things?”
“Yeah, but compare it to what?”
“I may have something for you.”
I left and was back quickly. My stomach was in knots. I didn’t want to be right, but I feared I was. If so, would it help us find the killer?
“Compare it to this.” I gave Sam a jar.
Sam raised an eyebrow. He opened the jar and started to sniff it.
“Don’t do that,” I warned.
“Is it dangerous?”
“Best to treat it like it is.”
He nodded. “I’ll let you know what I find.”
“Thanks.”
