Nice shot of a lovely artifact. I remember in the early 60s stopping at a mountain gas station that still served gas with these devices. The operator worked a hand pump on the side to pump gasoline from aqn underground tank into the transparent holding tank. The "trigger" on the filler hose opened a simple valve so the gas could drain from the pump into the car. No electricity needed.
Apparently in the early days of automobiles service station owners frequently short-changed customers on gas. These "visible" pumps were designed so a motorist could see exactly how much gasoline he was buying. Mistrust of service stations must have lasted for a long time. The electric pumps of my youth had visible flow meters and were covered with inspection stickers assuring us that the numerical indicators showed the true number of gallons pumped.
