Description
Dido in western tradition is know mostly as the tragic heartbroken paramour of the Trojan prince Aneas, as recounted in Virgil's Anead. However, there is much more to her story. Middle Eastern tradition tells how Elissa (her real name, sometimes rendered into Greek as Theiossio) was the sister of Pu'mayyaton (or Pygmalion), king of the Phoenician city-state of Tyre in modern day Lebanon. Fleeing his tyrannical rule in approximately 825 BC, she took a ship to North Africa where she founded her own city, which grew to be the mighty Carthage. Renowned for her beauty and intelligence, she is revered to this day in modern Tunisia.
