At the end of the 19th century, Alexander McDougall built a fleet of bulk carriers to operate on the Great Lakes and beyond. His original patent was for an unpowered barge, but he soon adapted his design for a Whaleback Steamship to tow barges. This image depicts a view from the stern of steam tow boat with a barge under tow.
