Roughly 40 million years ago, when I was studying art in college, one of my painting professors spoke at length about "automatic narrative", a concept wherein a viewer forms a narrative in his or her mind to explain what's happening in an image, whether the artist intended that narrative to be there or not. The effect happens most often when there are two figures in an image; something in the mind inherently wants to understand the relationship between them. In this image, I added the male figure originally simply to balance the composition; I wanted the artwork to be visible on the walls behind the female figure, and I wanted her to be fully visible -- not cropped. So... another figure, farther away, softened by a shallow depth of field, just to fill the space. And even with knowing that he was strictly filler material, and being the artist... I still found my mind wandering to various narratives to explain the relationship between the two. Did he bring her to the party? Is he just enjoying the view? Is he lusting after the girl, or after her diamonds? Is he a predator, a thief, or simply someone whose eyes were drawn to her shimmering dress like a fish drawn to a shiny lure? I probably shouldn't render things after midnight. My brain gets weird.
