Description
___ This second unlocked memory takes us to a country I thought for years I would never ever visit, being for me too unsafe, maybe not trustworthy enough for the Westerner I am. What a terrible mistake I made ! Turkey literally blew my mind , and I was amazed by the wondrous historical sites and the archeological riches that are found in this modern country, politically speaking, but known for centuries as a bridge between Europe and Asia.Last but not least, the Turks are one of the nicest, most helpful, welcoming and peaceful peoples I've ever met...
____ The little city of Uçhisar that you can see here is found in the region of Cappadocia, at the heart and very center of Turkey, and is famous for its numerous painted cliff houses, cut in tuff, a somewhat powdery rock that lends itself to carving and building houses, ermitages and most of the early Christian churches are still found at the very heart of the neighbouring mountains in underground networks of corridors, oratories, dormitories, dining rooms and sewage systems carved within those mountains, just like here in Uçhisar! In the centre of the town there is an underground gallery, which extends for about 100 metres underneath some houses. It was cut in tuff in earlier times and probably served as a link from the fortress at the top of the mountain (out of focus here)to the outside world and to protect the inhabitants' water supply. After being empty for decades, these cliff houses are nowadays refurbished and inhabited again, by the natives and also by some Turks of the diaspora who have saved enough money abroad to afford and rehabilitate them, when they come back home for keeps.

Your wonderful capture also has unlocked some fond memories for me...I immediately recognized the locale...I spent many months in Turkey as a member of a team of archaeologists working at the Gordion site. I traveled around much of Turkey as time and responsibilities permitted. The country is awe inspiring in its diversity and natural beauty, chock full of history--an archaeologist's heaven, and the Turks are a wonderful people. There are times I have a hankering for pide with a mug of beer.:)
Of all the locales that I visited, Cappadocia was truly unique. Touring some of the underground caverns was a great experience--quite spooky at times too. I should go through some of my photos and share them here too.

This is such a great adventure you are taking us one. For many, we will only see these far off places through your lens. Do you know how wonderful that is? I thank you so much for posting. Not only are your photo's magical and enchanting, so is your view on life. What you found upon your visit to a foreign place is very special. Friendship and welcoming are two of many traits that should draw us together as the world's people. As is said,' a rising tide lifts all boats.' So does friendship between nations and you are a wonderful ambassador. Well done my friend.

very impressive!

Congrats!

That place looks amazing, love that formation with the cave holes. Yeah I would be worried about countries like this myself.
After seeing the movie Midnight Express years ago gave me the willie's.

Looks like a most interesting place. Have the people there actually dug into those rocks to live inside of them? I certainly would like to go inside one of those to take a look!

What fascinating rock houses. I will probably never go here, but I am so glad you did, and could tell us what it was like. A great picture of such an unusual town!

A fascinating picture. I've only been to Cappadocia as a player in Assassin's Creed Revelation, but at least I know it a little. LOL Wonderful Photo and yes, it is a real misery that Turkey is no longer classified as a safe country. I hope there will be a change of government and a rethinking in society that is increasingly radicalized by Erdogan's power ...
Merry Christmas, my dear friend and stay safe and healthy.
