Once upon a time, long, long ago, in the kingdom of Neufergien, ruled by the wise King Baraltus. He lived in a castle with his beautiful daughter Kerosina, his greatest treasure. His wife had died early, so no boundaries were shown to her. She developed into a real tomboy. Nothing and nobody could frighten her. Instead of learning the high art of dancing and embroidery, she preferred to roam the woods. During one of her excursions Kerosina met a young man whose face as well as his politeness enchanted her. He told her about a place where wondrous treasures and sparkling gems abound. So he took her by the hand and pulled her with him. They wandered for seven days and seven nights, getting deeper and deeper into the forest. When Kerosina asked how much farther it was, the young man answered: "Not much further, look over there, this is already the beech tree I told you about! We'll soon reach the little stream we have to wade through." On the evening of the seventh day, they reached a dark cave. When it started raining, she followed the young man without a trace. She looked around the cave. Everywhere was a sparkle and glitter. She ran past him, further and further into the cave, to a green light that shone at the end of the cave. In the green glow she could not see that the young man did not have a human form anymore. Horns adorned his head, long shaggy hairs hung in his face. The moon rose, its light shone into the cave, and Kerosina recognized the figure. It was the mountain spirit that had been living in the cave for a long time. It was known that every now and then young girls disappeared if they were too curious and roamed the woods. Kerosina was not afraid, she was much too curious what to expect.
