Description
Dr. Van Humbeek's first sensation of the visitation was a discernible lowering of the room's ambient temperature. "I know you're present, she murmured. Why not show yourself?" The specter of a young woman gradually solidified before the researcher. "That's very good. Very nice. You must feel so alone here."
The faint whisper of the ghostly vision replied, "Yes. I have been very alone for a very, very long time. Forever it seems. You mean to keep me company?"
The researcher smiled faintly. "I don't mean to die, if that's your drift. Rather, I want to give you more freedom to interact with my world. To help me learn more of your world."
"So I'm to become one of your experiments?" the tone of the ghost shifted from friendly to distinctly hostile.
"No, no! Not merely an experiment! More a research assistant; a partner in my studies. I know a bit about you, Grace. I know you were a researcher, a medium, before..." Dr. Van Humbeek's voice trailed off.
"Before he murdered me?" The ghost's voice had shifted from hostility to a sense of deep sadness. "I was so young."
"Please consider joining my team," Dr. Van Humbeek eagerly continued. "I cannot reverse your death but I can give you a place on my team among the living..."
